The School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) is the University’s Extension Arm. Its role is to provide lifelong learning opportunities to the wider Hong Kong community for personal and career advancement through programmes of professional and continuing education. With over 1,000 full-time staff and some 2,100 part-time teaching staff, HKU SPACE is the leading local provider in the field of lifelong education. The School also offers full time Associate Degree and Higher Diploma programmes in the Community College, as well as full time undergraduate programmes under the Centre for Degree Programmes.
The School conducts taught postgraduate programmes in a wide variety of subjects organized by the three Colleges (Business and Finance, Humanities and Law, and Life Science and Technology) and the Centre for Degree Programmes. Some of these programmes are collaborative efforts with departments, centres or schools within the University, while others are joint ventures with overseas universities. In the academic year 2013-2014, there were 5,338 postgraduate student enrolments, equivalent to some 910 FTEs. Most courses are at Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree levels. At doctoral level, the School currently offers the Doctor of Social Science programme, in the field of Human Resource Development, in collaboration with the University of Leicester.
Whilst the School’s headquarters are located in the T.T.Tsui Building on the University Main Campus, HKU SPACE has a long history of locating its teaching and learning facilities at convenient downtown centres so as to better serve the community. Its flagship location is the Admiralty area where it has premises in the Admiralty Centre (2/F and 3/F) and United Centre (6/F). The School also uses its Community College campus and the HPSHCC Campus at Causeway Bay for both full-time and part-time students.
Additionally, there is the Island East Campus in North Point as well as the Fortress Tower Learning Centre. The Kowloon West Campus is at Mei Foo. The University Main Campus is also available for evening classes. The Island South Campus in Pokfulam houses the Centennial College, to which HKU SPACE provides management services.
In Mainland China, HKU SPACE offers programmes in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
